[Interview] Yuseonghun, Geumcheon-gu Mayor: New City Brand 'Good City Geumcheon' Means a City with Great Culture, Jobs, and Welfare for Better Living

“‘Good City GeumCheon’ is a newly developed city brand ahead of the 30th anniversary of the district’s establishment, symbolizing the direction and future of Geumcheon-gu.”

In an interview, Yuseonghun, the Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, stated, “While preparing for the 30th anniversary in 2025, we developed a new city brand incorporating the hopes and opinions of residents to create a positive external image and enhance the city’s competitiveness.”

On May 18, Geumcheon-gu held a city brand proclamation ceremony at the opening of its representative festival, the Geumcheon Harmony Festival, widely introducing the new city brand ‘Good City GeumCheon’ to residents. At the ceremony, Mayor Yuseonghun personally introduced the brand’s creation process, meaning, and symbolic significance.

Mayor Yuseonghun explained the background of developing the new city brand, saying, “We first developed and used the city brand ‘Brilliant Geumcheon’ in 2008, but the existing brand could not fully capture the image of Geumcheon that has evolved over 16 years. We needed a future-oriented image that could represent new changes.”

He added, “Our district is a ‘young city’ celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2025. ‘Good City’ signifies Geumcheon-gu’s attempt at new changes and future-oriented development as it reaches its thirtieth year.”

The brand development began in October 2022 with a city image perception survey, gathering opinions and conducting surveys among residents and workers in Geumcheon-gu. Including the city brand development task force, workshops, various events, and surveys, a total of 4,085 residents and workers participated. Keywords representing Geumcheon’s appeal and future city vision included G-Valley, warmth, transportation, and diversity.

In September last year, the district finalized the city brand name as ‘Good City GeumCheon’ and completed in-depth design work visualizing the brand’s identity and direction, finalizing the city brand development in February this year.

The new city brand ‘Good City GeumCheon’ expresses the developing Geumcheon-gu with the concise and clear theme that ‘a good city is Geumcheon.’

From a design perspective, the alphabets ‘G’ and ‘C’ appearing simultaneously in ‘Good City’ and ‘GeumCheon’ incorporate the Korean initial consonants ‘ㄱ’ and ‘ㅊ’ of Geumcheon. The harmonious blend of English and Korean enhances its usability abroad.

Additionally, the district’s symbolic colors?blue and the pink of azalea, the symbolic flower?are combined to convey a message of harmonious unity between the district’s bright future (G-Valley, advancement of high-tech industries) and the resident community.

Mayor Yuseonghun stated, “The new city brand will be used in projects promoted by the district, promotional sculptures, and public facilities. We also plan to upload specially produced promotional videos on the district office website, YouTube, and other media, and produce various souvenirs to promote the brand through resident participation events.”

Finally, Mayor Yuseonghun concluded, “With the 30th anniversary approaching next year, we have created the city brand ‘Good City GeumCheon’ and hope for much interest. We will do our best to help Geumcheon become a ‘city with great culture,’ a ‘city with good jobs,’ and a ‘city with excellent welfare,’ so that it can newly leap forward as a ‘good city to live in.’”
