Miryang City, Gyeongnam Province, announced on the 28th that the "Miryang Arirang Arts Troupe" was selected for the "2024 Regional Representative Arts Group Development Support Project," a public contest organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for local governments nationwide, securing 500 million KRW in national funding on the 27th.

This project aims to discover and nurture arts groups that will be active in local communities under the vision of "A Local Era Led by Culture, Balanced Development Driven by Culture." The Ministry will select 22 arts groups across the country in four fields?classical music, theater, dance, and traditional arts?that will carry out artistic activities based on unique regional content, and will provide a total budget of 10.6 billion KRW this year.

Last year, Miryang City was selected for the Ministry’s "Local 100" with its Miryang Arirang content. With this selection, the city will invest a total of 1 billion KRW, including 500 million KRW in national funding, to pilot the newly established "Miryang Arirang Arts Troupe" for the revitalization of local culture and arts based on the values of Arirang.

This has laid the foundation for the establishment of the "Miryang Municipal Arts Troupe," a pledge of Mayor Ahn Byungku, aimed at developing new local cultural and artistic content and creating jobs for artists.

Under the vision of "Miryang Arirang! Through Art, To the World, Into the Future," the city plans to solidly organize the Miryang Arirang Arts Troupe, develop three major K-Arirang performing arts contents, create a cultural and artistic ecosystem involving 1% of the city’s population, and vitalize culture and arts content businesses based on Arirang values. Through these efforts, Miryang aims to be designated as an "Arirang Arts Special Zone Unique Venue" and to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as an international city that exchanges with the world through the values of Arirang, promoting the globalization of Miryang Arirang.

Mayor Ahn Byungku stated, "Miryang is a region rich in cultural heritage, including Miryang Arirang, Yeongnamnu, and traditional houses. Based on these cultural assets, local artists have the foundation to freely create and perform. We will improve facilities and develop new programs so that not only artists who have left their hometown but also young artists from Yeongnam can come to Miryang."
