"Vibrant and Beautiful Street Creation Plus" Contest
A "vibrant and beautiful street" will be created in the aging Ulsan-Mipo National Industrial Complex and Maegok General Industrial Complex.
The city of Ulsan announced on the 28th that two projects have been selected for the "2024 Industrial Complex Environment Creation Integrated Public Contest," specifically in the "Vibrant and Beautiful Street Creation Plus Project" category, which is hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Korea Industrial Complex Corporation.
This contest was aimed at improving the working environment in industrial complexes that have been in operation for over 20 years, with goals including strengthening corporate competitiveness, introducing specialized designs, and creating rest areas and green spaces for workers.
In this contest, Ulsan had its "Ulsan-Mipo National Industrial Complex Vibrant and Beautiful Street Creation Plus Project" and "Maegok General Industrial Complex Vibrant and Beautiful Street Creation Plus Project" selected.
As a result, Ulsan has secured 4 billion KRW in national funding and will begin the projects in earnest.
For the Ulsan-Mipo National Industrial Complex, not only will 2 billion KRW in national funding be provided, but also, last March, SK Innovation Co., Ltd., which is located in the industrial complex, signed a business agreement for the "Fun City Ulsan, Industrial Landscape Improvement Project," bringing the total project budget to 5.9 billion KRW.
The design motif will be based on the designation of the Ulsan-Mipo Special Industrial Zone in 1962, and the brand "Mipo1962" has been selected. The project will install a design gateway, media art LED sculptures, art design photo zones, pedestrian path improvements, and art walls.
For the Maegok General Industrial Complex, a total project budget of 3.2 billion KRW, combining national and city funds, will be invested to create a "mobility-leading industrial complex embracing youth and culture."
Old sidewalks and park facilities that hinder pedestrian movement will be improved, and rest areas and meeting plazas will be created using parking lots and vacant lots, providing spaces where workers can relax and enjoy cultural and artistic events.
Additionally, symbolic structures featuring specialized designs will be installed to improve the gray image of the industrial complex. Furthermore, a walkway connecting the industrial complex and residential areas will be built in the previously neglected riverside green zone, allowing workers to use parks and waterfront spaces outside the complex, and promoting the transformed Maegok Industrial Complex to citizens.
Ulsan plans to complete the design and planning for both projects by the second half of this year, begin construction next year, and finish by 2026.
