Dongseong Hwa In Tech Obtains Concept Approval for Liquefied Carbon Dioxide Carrier Cargo Tank

12,000 CBM Class... Joint Development with K-Joseon and Sunbo Industry

Dong Sung Chemical's LNG insulation material specialist subsidiary, Dongsung Fine Tec, announced on the 28th that it has obtained Approval In Principle (AIP) certification from the Korean Register (KR) for the cargo tanks of liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carriers.

In September last year, Dongsung Fine Tec signed a business agreement with K Shipbuilding, Sunbo Industry, and the Korean Register to jointly develop a 12,000 CBM liquefied carbon dioxide carrier and began developing the cargo tanks for the vessel.

K Shipbuilding was responsible for the design of the liquefied carbon dioxide carrier, Sunbo Industry developed the cargo handling and fuel supply systems, and the Korean Register conducted safety and compliance verification.

Dongsung Fine Tec applied an independent cargo tank (C-Type) capable of withstanding high pressure of 19 barg to ensure the safe transportation of liquefied carbon dioxide. Since the cargo tanks of liquefied carbon dioxide carriers must maintain both low temperature and high pressure, advanced technology is required.

As the global decarbonization trend accelerates, carbon capture and storage technology, which captures carbon dioxide generated in industrial sites and stores it in depleted gas fields or deep underground aquifers, is gaining attention as a key technology for achieving carbon neutrality. The demand for liquefied carbon dioxide carriers needed to transport the captured carbon dioxide is also increasing significantly.

Park Ji-il, Head of Business Division at Dongsung Fine Tec, said, "Based on this achievement, Dongsung Fine Tec will secure new business opportunities in the liquefied carbon dioxide carrier sector. We will accelerate the development and commercialization of shipboard carbon dioxide capture and storage technologies and proactively respond to the strengthened maritime regulations in line with the International Maritime Organization's zero greenhouse gas emissions target."
