On the 28th, LG Electronics announced that it is conducting a global tree-planting campaign to respond to the climate crisis caused by carbon emissions. In addition to the independent activities of LG Electronics' overseas subsidiaries, the company explained that it is fulfilling its social responsibility as a global corporation by participating in the carbon reduction policies of the countries to which they belong.
In the case of LG Electronics Spain, it is carrying out a forest regeneration campaign called "Smart Green Tree," which plants seed bombs?clumps of soil, compost, and seeds that increase germination rates?in Spain and Portugal. Since its launch in 2017, the campaign has increased the number of trees planted annually, aiming to plant 47 million trees per year, equivalent to the total population of Spain.
Since last year, the "Smart Green Bees" project has been added to promote plant prosperity. This project aims to increase the population of native bees capable of pollinating all plants in Spain (Iberian bees) to about 47 million. In fact, the Spanish subsidiary increased the number of Iberian bees by approximately 3.5 million within a year as of last May.
In Saudi Arabia, the "LG Yalla Green" campaign is underway in line with the national carbon reduction policy, the Saudi Green Initiative. Yalla means "let's go together" in Arabic. Local employees are planting trees in desert areas and promoting energy-efficient air conditioning products.
In April, LG Electronics established a "Pollinator Garden" at its North American headquarters in New Jersey, becoming the first Korean company to receive wildlife habitat certification from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) in the United States. The Pollinator Garden is a garden where bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, whose populations have declined due to climate change, can live stably. Its purpose is to preserve biodiversity and build a sustainable ecosystem.
Lee Sam-su, Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) of LG Electronics, said, "As a global corporate citizen, we will work closely with our global subsidiaries to create a sustainable future."
Meanwhile, considering the strategic importance of ESG management, LG Electronics has a CSO at the C-level of top management overseeing its execution. Lee Sam-su also serves as the chairperson of the ESG Council, a consultative body among organizations executing ESG by division.
