Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced on the 28th that it will support a total of 300 units this year by implementing the ‘Food Waste RFID Meter Installation Support Project’ targeting apartment complexes with 50 or more households to create a pleasant residential environment.

The ‘Food Waste RFID Meter System’ automatically measures the amount of food waste when food is disposed of in individual measuring devices and charges fees based on the amount discarded. This system aligns with the polluter pays principle and is highly effective in reducing food waste.

Since 2014, the district has been implementing the ‘Food Waste RFID Meter Distribution Project’ and currently operates a total of 729 RFID-based individual measuring devices installed in 43,500 households in apartment complexes with 50 or more households.

In particular, since 2022, the district has been providing free electronic tag (RFID) meters to areas affected by aircraft noise. Reflecting the significant increase in meter distribution, starting this year, the district plans to fully cover the purchase and installation costs of meters for all applicant residences regardless of the area, taking the lead in reducing food waste.

A district official stated, “Comparing the amount of food waste before and after the installation of the meters, the amount of food waste decreased by about 36%,” adding, “The installation of meters greatly contributes to the reduction of food waste.”

The project targets 300 apartment complexes with 50 or more households that wish to install RFID-based food waste meters, accepting applications on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested apartment complexes can submit related documents such as the project consent form and residents’ representative meeting minutes via email to the person in charge.

Meanwhile, the district was recognized for its efforts in reducing food waste generation in the 2023 local government performance evaluation for food waste management and was selected as the best local government nationwide, receiving a commendation from the Ministry of Environment.

Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “We have decided to provide free distribution of food waste RFID meters for apartment complexes this year so that more residents can benefit from already widespread digital technology,” adding, “We will continue to discover and promote innovative resource circulation policies to reduce waste and create a clean Yangcheon without waste concerns.”
