Daejeon Mayor Ijangwoo: "A Transportation Network Connecting All Cities in the Chungcheong Region Must Be Designed"

On the 27th, Lee Jang-woo, Mayor of Daejeon, emphasized the need for cooperation to revitalize Cheongju Airport along with establishing a transportation network connecting the entire Chungcheong region during the weekly work meeting.

The mayor stated, “The transportation network should be designed so that all cities in the Chungcheong region can be connected centered around Daejeon,” and added, “The construction of Daejeon’s urban railway up to Line 5 means that connectivity with nearby cities such as Gongju, Gyeryong, Nonsan, Sejong, Okcheon, and Geumsan must be fully considered.”

He continued, “We have also proposed either including Daejeon in parentheses for Cheongju International Airport or naming it Cheongju-Sejong-Daejeon Airport,” and said, “Cheongju Airport should serve as the international airport for the Chungcheong region.”

Furthermore, he emphasized, “The biggest current issue with Cheongju Airport is the short runway, which makes it difficult for large aircraft to take off,” and added, “Since it is an airport used by Daejeon citizens as well, we must cooperate with Chungbuk Province to expand and extend the runway so that large aircraft can operate routes to the Americas or Europe.”

That afternoon, Mayor Lee signed a business agreement with Aero K airline to revitalize Cheongju International Airport by expanding international routes.

The city plans to jointly develop strategic routes for active exchanges with Daejeon’s sister cities, including direct flights to Sapporo, aiming to enhance convenience for citizens and promote mutual development in the Chungcheong region through increased use of Cheongju Airport.
