The Democratic Party appoints Seo Byung-soo as Election Commission Chair... Hwang Woo-yeo says "Party Convention to Proceed Without Delay"

Assemblyman Seo Byung-su Recognized as a 5-Term Veteran with Faint Factional Colors

On the 27th, the People Power Party appointed Assemblyman Seo Byung-soo as the next party convention election commissioner.

Hwang Woo-yeo, the Emergency Response Committee Chairman, announced that during the Emergency Response Committee meeting held that morning at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, he requested Assemblyman Seo to take the position of election commissioner, and Seo readily accepted. The Emergency Response Committee resolved in a closed meeting that day to appoint Assemblyman Seo as the election commissioner.

Seo, a five-term National Assembly member from Busan Haeundae·Gijang Gap and Busanjin Gap, and former mayor of Busan, ran in Busan Buk·Gangseo Gap in the April 10 general election following the party's request to run in a challenging district but was defeated by Jeon Jae-su of the Democratic Party of Korea. Seo is considered a figure with a weak factional affiliation within the party and previously served as the primary election preparation committee chairman during the last presidential election.

Chairman Hwang evaluated Assemblyman Seo, saying, "He has extensive experience not only through years of legislative activities but also as a former mayor of Busan. When I was party leader during the presidential election, he served as secretary-general, and I have always held respect and gratitude for his work and impartial party administration."

Since the election commission is responsible for all election management tasks, including candidate registration announcements, voting and counting management, and sanctioning candidates who violate regulations, it is expected that the schedule for the People Power Party convention will be discussed once the election commission members are finalized. According to the party's constitution and regulations, the party convention election commission is composed of up to 15 members.

At the meeting, Chairman Hwang emphasized, "We need to finish the party convention quickly, so we will proceed without delay. Since this convention represents the party's rebirth, accompanied by reform and renewal beyond just founding, I hope the election commissioner will lead well, and I will coordinate with the commissioner to promptly finalize the remaining convention schedule."
