Yang Moon-seok, a Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) elected official, on the 26th harshly criticized his party’s four-term veteran lawmaker Woo Sang-ho, calling him a "rotten vested interest, rotten 586."
On the same day, Yang posted on his YouTube channel’s bulletin board, publicly criticizing Woo by saying, "Those who have stopped the spirit of the times at the standards of 20 years ago are boasting about the DPK’s tradition, insisting that the floor leader and the Speaker candidate are the rights of lawmakers, and are once again engaging in internal backstabbing."
Earlier, Woo had opposed party members participating in the selection process of the Speaker candidate and floor leader in a recent media interview. He reasoned that "the floor leader position being elected by lawmakers has long been an established rule within the DPK."
In response, Yang argued, "Going against the mighty current of history is not 'salmon' but 'treason,'" adding, "Now, according to a new spirit of the times, party members must naturally have the authority to elect the party’s floor leader and Speaker candidates."
He continued, "Only then are party members the true owners, and only then can the DPK expand and grow," adding, "Old-fashioned politics is getting tiresome. It would be good if you studied a bit. Ignorance is boldness, Woo Sang-ho."
Yang was previously disciplined with a "three-month suspension from party duties" after calling lawmaker Jeon Hae-cheol, a member of the anti-Lee Jae-myung faction, a "watermelon" (a derogatory term used by hardline party members against the anti-Lee faction). Ahead of the 22nd general election, there were also calls to cancel his nomination due to controversy over disparaging the late former President Roh Moo-hyun.
