Gyeonggi-do Establishes 'Safety Inspection Guidelines' for Bungee Jumping and Ziplining

Gyeonggi-do Establishes 'Safety Inspection Guidelines' for Bungee Jumping and Ziplining Zipline Facility Safety Inspection

Gyeonggi Province has established and distributed the 'Gyeonggi Province Safety Inspection Guidelines' for bungee jumping and zipline facilities to prevent similar accidents following a safety incident that occurred at an indoor bungee jumping site in Anseong last February.

Bungee jumping and ziplining are extreme leisure activities that require thorough safety management; however, due to the absence of relevant laws, there have been continuous concerns about safety accidents caused by inadequate safety management.

Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province, led by the Safety Management Office, conducted joint on-site safety inspections of 28 locations in the province, including 9 bungee jumping sites and 19 zipline sites, together with city and county authorities and facility managers. Based on the inspection results, the 'Gyeonggi Province Safety Inspection Guidelines' were developed and distributed to each city, county, and facility manager.

Gyeonggi Province referred to amusement facility inspection standards under the Tourism Promotion Act, domestic and international safety management system research reports, and manuals for the creation and operation of forest leisure facilities to prepare the guidelines through expert consultation. The guidelines include facility installation standards, types and timing of safety inspections, and inspection items.

The main contents include ▲ facility installation standards such as wire ropes, zipline braking devices, and fall prevention safety nets ▲ timing for replacing safety equipment such as harnesses, bungee cords, and carabiners (metal rings used for connecting ropes in rock climbing) ▲ types and timing of safety inspections such as daily inspections and regular inspections.

Kim Neung-sik, Director of the Gyeonggi Province Safety Management Office, stated, "Until related safety management standards and laws for extreme leisure activities such as bungee jumping and ziplining are established, we plan to use the Gyeonggi Province Safety Inspection Guidelines for safety management."
