What is 'Carbon Neutrality'? ... Director Lee Jung-mo and Julian Quintart Answer

Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will host an environmental special lecture featuring former director of the National Gwacheon Science Museum Lee Jeong-mo and broadcaster Julian Quintart.

The special lecture, scheduled for June 22 at 2 p.m. at the Nowon-gu Citizens' Hall, aims to raise awareness among residents about the seriousness of the global climate crisis and to encourage interest in the environment, thereby spreading the will to practice carbon neutrality.

First, former director Lee Jeong-mo will give the opening lecture on the topic of "Climate Crisis and Carbon Neutrality." Known as the author of the bestseller “Science Is Difficult for Me Too”, Lee is well-regarded for delivering complex scientific knowledge such as climate crisis and global warming in an easy and engaging way from a popular perspective.

In this lecture, he plans to make the somewhat heavy topic of the "climate crisis" easy to understand and share opinions with residents about "carbon neutrality" through a Q&A session.

The second lecture will be delivered by broadcaster Julian Quintart. Julian Quintart is an environmental activist who has consistently raised his voice on environmental issues through broadcasts and his personal channels. In 2016, he was appointed as an honorary ambassador for the "European Union Climate Action." He currently leads by example in practicing environmentally friendly daily habits and actively engages in lecture activities.

Julian Quintart will guide various ways to practice carbon neutrality in daily life through veganism and zero waste under the theme of "Vegan, Zero Waste Carbon Neutral Practice."

Residents who wish to participate can apply online from 10 a.m. on June 1 to June 20 via the Nowon-gu Office or Nowon Environmental Foundation websites. The lecture is free, and registration is limited to the first 500 applicants. It can also be watched live on the Nowon Environmental Foundation YouTube channel.

Meanwhile, the district held the "2nd Nowon Car-Free Street Festival" last April. This festival, first implemented by a Seoul autonomous district last year, not only aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by cutting down on disposable products but also calculated the total greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the event and challenged carbon neutrality by offsetting the actual emissions. To realize Nowon as a carbon-neutral city by 2050, the "Nowon-gu Carbon Neutral Support Center" was also opened and is currently operating.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “As many people have become more interested in environmental issues after experiencing recent abnormal weather, we prepared this special lecture to think about these issues together. Carbon neutrality cannot be achieved by the efforts of a single entity alone, so we will continue to promote carbon neutrality and encourage participation through various projects.”
