Sindobong Market Transforms into a Young and Modern Market through Comprehensive Environmental Improvement Project
Recognized as a Traditional Market by Meeting Legal and Institutional Requirements with Merchant Association Registration and Area Expansion Last Year
Project Budget of 1.14 Billion KRW Invested, Construction Proceeding in Focused Improvement Zones Since October Last Year and Other Areas
The 50-year-old Sindobong Market has been reborn as a young and modern traditional market.
Dobong-gu (District Mayor Oh Eon-seok) announced that it has completed the comprehensive environmental improvement project for Sindobong Market and held a completion ceremony on the 22nd, attended by about 50 people including Mayor Oh Eon-seok, Jo Gi-je, president of the Sindobong Market Merchants Association, merchants, and residents.
On this day, Mayor Oh Eon-seok of Dobong-gu said, “I would like to thank the merchants and residents who endured various inconveniences during the construction period. We will continue to support so that Sindobong Market can become even more vibrant in the future.”
Opened in 1974, Sindobong Market is a representative market of Dobong-gu with a 50-year history. With the start of the 8th local government term, under active support from the district, the traditional market recognition area was expanded and the merchants association registration was promoted. As of February 2023, the market area expanded from 22 stores and 2,622㎡ to 160 stores and 11,389㎡. Thus, it was officially recognized as a traditional market for the first time in 50 years.
The district took a step further and began improving the aging facilities and environment of Sindobong Market from October two years ago. A total of 1.14 billion KRW was invested in the project. Based on the degree of aging, the construction was divided into a concentrated improvement section and other sections.
In the concentrated improvement section, where aging was severe and passage was inconvenient, extensive repairs were carried out. The sewage pipes were completely replaced, and asphalt paving and design paving were completed over a 120m section.
Additionally, to prevent fires and improve passage convenience, an electric retractable awning made of flame-retardant material measuring 104m in length, 3.5m in width, and 4.8m in height was installed. For user convenience, sales counters of 36 stores were improved, and new electronic payment information boards were installed.
For the other section, 210m in length, where aging was less severe, floor design paving was done and old awnings of individual stores were replaced.
As a result of this comprehensive environmental improvement project, merchants and customers have expressed relief as the market’s clutter, which was a major cause of safety accidents and passage inconvenience, has been organized.
One customer said, “Every time I used the market, I had to avoid people and clutter while shopping, but now the paths are wider, so I don’t have to do that anymore, which is great,” adding, “I plan to use it more often in the future.”
The district plans to continue management to make the market satisfying for both merchants and customers.
They plan to assign a traditional market manager to administratively support the Sindobong Market Merchants Association, and actively promote projects to revitalize the market, such as expanding Onnuri gift certificate affiliated stores and applying for Seoul City’s facility modernization project to install pole signs.
