Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) is actively promoting the ‘2024 Mapo-gu Pest Control and Disinfection Project’ to protect residents from infectious diseases and pests that threaten health and safety.

Last year, a total of 307 cases of infectious diseases transmitted by sanitary pests such as mosquitoes occurred in the Seoul area, of which 9 cases were reported in Mapo-gu.

Although this is a low number, the recent rapid rise in temperature has increased the risk of mosquito-borne infectious diseases such as malaria, prompting Mapo-gu to take proactive measures to alleviate residents’ concerns.

In March, based on the previous year’s pest control data and demand surveys from local community centers, Mapo-gu completed status surveys of ▲pest control complaint areas ▲vulnerable household concentration areas ▲larvae habitats within redevelopment zones ▲vacant houses ▲and garbage accumulation sites, selecting 93 pest-vulnerable locations.

Two pest control task forces composed of Mapo-gu employees regularly manage pest control in vulnerable areas and promptly carry out pest control and disinfection when pest or infectious disease complaints arise.

Additionally, to enable rapid autonomous pest control, Mapo-gu plans to intensify disinfection activities throughout the year in cooperation with the Saemaeul Autonomous Pest Control Team, consisting of 80 members with 16 electric vehicles.

Furthermore, Mapo-gu conducts objective data collection and scientific analysis using light traps and digital mosquito monitors installed in densely populated residential areas to predict pest control demand and infectious disease outbreaks. The prediction results will be used not only for focused pest control activities but also for the ‘Mosquito Forecast System,’ which provides daily mosquito occurrence levels and behavioral guidelines.

Moreover, Mapo-gu will distribute over 5,000 pest control products targeting cockroaches, mosquitoes, ants, and other pests to welfare facilities for the elderly, disabled, and children in vulnerable areas, and operate 187 ultraviolet lamp pest control devices installed throughout Mapo to promote eco-friendly pest control.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, stated, “Ahead of the hot and humid summer, we have decided to actively promote pest control activities to reduce the number of sanitary pests causing inconvenience to residents. Mapo-gu will create a safe and healthy environment free from infectious diseases and pests through swift proactive measures.”
