Kim Yong-eun, a senior researcher at the Korea Automotive Technology Institute, was selected as this year’s Inventor King.
On the 21st, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced that it held the ‘59th Inventors’ Day’ ceremony at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul, selecting and awarding 80 inventors for their contributions.
Inventors’ Day is a national holiday designated in 1957 to commemorate the invention of the world’s first rain gauge in Korea on May 19, 1441.
The Inventors’ Day ceremony is held annually, hosted by KIPO and organized by the Korea Invention Promotion Association. The awards aim to boost the morale of inventors and contributors and to spread a nationwide inventive spirit.
At this year’s Inventors’ Day ceremony, the title of Inventor King was awarded to Researcher Kim. He was recognized for devising an emergency stop method that allows a vehicle to be stopped by a switch in the event of unintended acceleration during driving, thereby contributing to improving driving safety and public safety.
The invention (intellectual property) devised by Researcher Kim has been transferred to the public sector both for a fee and free of charge, also contributing to corporate technology support.
At the ceremony, the Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit was awarded to Kim Byung-hoon, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of LG Electronics Inc.
Vice President Kim was recognized for his dedication of over 30 years to developing next-generation standard technologies, enabling LG Electronics to secure world-class standard patents including core communication standards, and to continuously generate patent royalty income in the global market.
The Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit was awarded to Lineho, Vice Chairman of Dongwoo Fine-Chem Co., Ltd., and Kim Jong-woon, Technical Advisor of SL Corporation. The Red Stripes Order of Service Merit was awarded to Professor Oh Hyun-ok of Hanyang University.
KIPO also provided an opportunity for attendees to view exhibits featuring excellent technologies developed by the inventors (companies) honored at the ceremony.
The main exhibits included ▲ the world’s first wireless OLED TV with 4K·120Hz wireless transmission technology (LG Electronics Inc.) ▲ G-TLD, a transparent LED display applying proprietary glass substrate patterning technology (Dongwoo Fine-Chem Co., Ltd.) ▲ the world’s smallest micro-lens headlamp applied to Hyundai Genesis (SL Corporation) ▲ a voting system based on blockchain technology and zero-knowledge proof encryption technology (Professor Oh Hyun-ok, Hanyang University) ▲ and future automotive technologies (Korea Automotive Technology Institute).
Kim Si-hyung, Acting Commissioner of KIPO, said, “We express our gratitude to all inventors who have worked hard for Korea’s industrial development,” adding, “KIPO will continue to strive to help Korea take a leap forward through intellectual property together with inventors.”
