Two Seoul National University Alumni Arrested and Sent to Prosecution for Producing and Distributing Obscene Material Using Junior's Photos

Three Accomplices Also Arrested for Distributing Illegal Pornographic Material

Men who synthesized face photos of junior female students to create obscene materials and distributed them in group chat rooms have been handed over to the prosecution in custody.

The Cyber Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 21st that men in their 30s, Mr. A and Mr. B, were sent to prosecution in custody on charges of violating the Sexual Violence Punishment Act (editing and distribution of false videos, etc.). Additionally, three accomplices who received or directly produced and distributed the illegal obscene materials created by them were also arrested, with one of them taken into custody.

According to the police, Mr. A and Mr. B divided roles and committed crimes of producing and distributing illegal obscene materials from July 2021 until last month.

Mr. B produced illegal obscene materials targeting university alumni and provided the victims' personal information, while Mr. A distributed these materials and contacted the victims. They are alumni of Seoul National University and, although they were strangers, they communicated and built a relationship through Telegram.

Later, Mr. A, along with three accomplices including Mr. C, whom he met in a Telegram chat room, committed crimes of performing obscene acts on the illegal obscene materials produced by Mr. B and re-recording them. The three accomplices are also accused of producing and distributing illegal obscene materials targeting acquaintances.

Initially, the victims filed individual and group complaints with the police, but due to the high anonymity of Telegram, the suspects could not be identified, and the investigation was suspended with a non-prosecution decision.

Subsequently, the Cyber Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency launched an investigation. The police plan to continue tracking those who redistribute illegal obscene materials.

A police official stated, "We will actively cooperate with overseas investigative agencies to eradicate cyber sexual violence crimes," and urged, "Please be especially careful when posting personal photos or information on the internet to avoid becoming victims."
