Support for Cameras to Prevent Illegal Dumping in Blind Spots, Nighttime Security Patrols Conducted, etc.
Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) has been addressing the issue of illegal dumping of household waste in the area around Beondong 492, the first Moa Town site in Seoul, by establishing a special collection plan since last month and resolving the problem through public-private cooperation.
The Beondong 429 area, the first Moa Town project site in Seoul, will have a total of 1,242 households (up to 35 floors, 13 buildings) apartment complex completed by 2026. After the approval of the street housing project implementation plan for five Moa houses in Beondong in July last year, residents began moving in January this year, and over 80% of the relocation has been completed.
As the relocation began in earnest, illegal dumping of household waste and electronic waste has occurred throughout the area, along with issues such as fires in vacant houses and foul odors.
In response, Gangbuk-gu held a meeting last month with the developer (association), cleaning agency, and the district office’s planning situation room to discuss countermeasures to ensure the residential environment for relocating households.
As a result of the meeting, it was decided that the developer would establish and implement a plan to handle household waste within the project site, and the district office will temporarily support cameras to prevent illegal dumping in blind spots where such dumping is a concern.
Additionally, signs prohibiting violations will be installed at key points, and security patrols will be conducted during nighttime to prevent illegal activities. Continuous promotion of proper household waste disposal methods will be carried out targeting households preparing to relocate.
In particular, for large waste disposal, the options for reporting and processing through the district office or the developer will be expanded based on the opinions of the relocating residents to prevent illegal dumping. The cleaning agency agreed to promptly handle various household wastes to prevent illegal dumping caused by long-term accumulation of waste.
Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, "We will cooperate with the developer to reduce illegal dumping of household waste until the relocation of Beondong residents is completed," and added, "Gangbuk-gu will do its best to minimize various inconveniences for residents until the completion of Beondong Moa Town."
