"Buildings Tilted and Raised Everywhere, Is It Safe?"... Yonsei University Dormitory Collapse Fear Spreads

Weekend SNS Capture Raises Student Anxiety
Student Council "Annual Safety Inspections... No Issues Found"

At the dormitory of Yonsei University Sinchon Campus in Seoul, the floor of the building appeared to be tilted. The photo quickly spread through the university student community 'Everytime,' and some students expressed anxiety, saying, "We need to get outside quickly." However, the school explained that the safety inspection results showed no particular issues with the building.

The commotion occurred on the 18th. On 'Everytime,' claims emerged stating that the 'Ujeongwon' dormitory building at Yonsei University was tilting. Ujeongwon is a dormitory at Yonsei University Sinchon Campus, completed in 2014.

The student who wrote the post claimed that the floor of the self-kitchen on the basement level 1 of the Ujeongwon building was lifting, causing the refrigerator to tilt. In fact, the photo he took shows the central refrigerator appearing to stand at an angle. Also, the floor around the refrigerator is slightly tilted.

After the photo was released, reports from other students followed. Posts appeared saying, "Concrete powder fell in the basement level 1 cafeteria," and "The floor has risen to the level of a speed bump." Anxiety spread that the building might collapse as it was.

There were also calls to evacuate the building. Voices such as "Don't look back, just get out quickly," "Getting out of the building should be the top priority," and "If we leave the dormitory, we have nowhere to go, what should we do?" were heard.

Meanwhile, the fire authorities who responded to the report checked inside the building and judged that there were no signs of the dormitory collapsing, and then withdrew. On the 19th, the Yonsei University Student Council posted an official notice on Instagram.

The Student Council explained, "The Facilities Department has been conducting safety inspections once a year on all buildings of the Sinchon Campus through a professional inspection company," and "There were no special abnormal findings in the 2023 safety inspection either." However, some students still expressed anxiety.

On the afternoon of the 20th, posts continued on social media, saying "Still anxious," and "There were sounds like humming heard before." The school promised to alleviate the concerns of students and parents by stating, "We will conduct a detailed safety inspection as soon as possible in consultation with the Facilities Department."
