Light Drone Show as a Catalyst for Fostering the 'E-Mobility Industry' Utilizing New Industry Infrastructure

Pohang City will present a spectacular fireworks drone show at the '2024 Pohang International Fireworks Festival,' which will be held from May 31 to June 2 at Yeongildae Beach and its surrounding area.

On May 31 and June 1, 1,000 fireworks drones will perform for about 10 minutes starting at 9:40 p.m. each night. Under the theme 'Highlight of Pohang!', the show will fill the night sky with dazzling displays synchronized to music.

The fireworks drone show will capture the audience's attention by presenting a dynamic city vision where the 'fire' born from the blast furnaces of Pohang, Korea's leading steel industry city, transforms into the 'light' of new industries such as batteries.

This drone show is generating even more anticipation as Pablo Air and Hanwha, who set a new Guinness World Record with 1,068 fireworks drones at the World Drone Light Show in Songdo, Incheon last April, are expected to showcase a special 'fireworks drone cluster show' where fireworks are launched simultaneously with drone flights.

The city plans to use this fireworks drone show as an opportunity to actively foster the 'e-mobility industry' by utilizing its existing new industry infrastructure.

'E-mobility (Electronic mobility)' introduces the concept of networking into mobility, and is closely related to the drone industry, where 'autonomous flight'?drones communicating and flying organically?is a core technology.

Pohang is already recognized as a leading advanced science city in Korea, with nationwide drone events such as the 'Pohang Drone Festival' and the 'National Drone Fishing Competition.' In addition, in the field of drone soccer, Pohang University boasts the nation's top team, while the 'Pohang Youth Drone Pest Control Team,' an agricultural cooperative, utilizes automatic pest control drones, demonstrating the city's diverse and robust drone technology capabilities in both public and private sectors.

Furthermore, with the goal of establishing the 'Pohang-style K-Robot Valley,' the city is working with Neuromeka and the POSCO Holdings Future Technology Research Institute to build a shared robotics research lab and robot manufacturing plant in the Yeongilman 3rd Industrial Complex, thereby expanding the industrial base. By attracting global events to the 'Pohang International Exhibition & Convention Center (POEX),' scheduled for completion at the end of 2026, the city aims to become a game changer in the e-mobility industry market through the MICE industry.

Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "The brilliant lights illuminating the night sky symbolize the limitless potential of Pohang City itself," and added, "Based on our abundant new industry infrastructure, we will unite the public, private, and academic sectors to lead the e-mobility industry."

At this year's '2024 Pohang International Fireworks Festival,' not only will there be the fireworks drone show, but also Korea's only 'International Fireworks Competition' featuring teams from the UK, Australia, and China, the 'Grand Finale' by Korea (Hanwha), and the 'Daily Fireworks Show' combined with a multimedia show set against the backdrop of Yeongildae and POSCO's nightscape, promising a splendid and grand spectacle of lights throughout the festival period.
