Former U.S. President Donald Trump sparked controversy over age-related risks following President Joe Biden, who frequently makes verbal slips, by pausing his speech for about 30 seconds and remaining silent during an address.
According to local U.S. media on the 19th (local time), Trump, who is 77 years old this year, paused for about 30 seconds while praising the state of Texas during his speech at the National Rifle Association (NRA) annual meeting held in Texas the previous day.
He stopped speaking and appeared to stare straight ahead, then after 30 seconds continued, saying, "Our country is declining."
Democratic supporters immediately launched an offensive against former President Trump. The Democratic base attacked, saying, "Trump froze during his campaign," and "He is clearly unfit for the presidency." They used the age-related risk that had hindered 81-year-old President Biden this year as a counterattack against Trump.
In particular, Democratic supporters also recalled the case of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of the Republican Party. At that time, McConnell suddenly stopped speaking twice for about 30 seconds during his remarks, fueling the controversy over politicians' age.
Stephen Cheung, spokesperson for the Trump campaign, explained, calling it a "powerful dramatic effect," and said, "Any American recalling the disastrous Biden presidency cannot help but worry about the direction of the country."
