Team Leader Ham Started Practicing Judo at Yangcheon-gu Sports Center Next to Yangcheon-gu Office in 2005, Marking 20 Years This Year and Obtained Official 4th Dan...Highly Praised by Colleagues and Seniors
Ham Yong-ju, head of the Yangcheon-gu press team, has become a hot topic for showing perseverance by continuing judo, which he learned after joining the company, for 20 years this year.
After graduating from university, Ham started his public service career in 2005 as a level 9 public official in Yangcheon-gu. Shortly after, he visited the Yangcheon-gu Sports Center next to the district office, debating whether to learn swimming or judo, and began learning judo, eventually becoming a certified 4th dan black belt.
Ham said, “It has been 20 years since I decided to learn judo when I went to the Yangcheon Sports Center to exercise after starting my public service career. I usually stop by the dojo about three times a week after work to train, and I really enjoy it.”
After Ham experienced the taste of judo, his son Hyung-min, currently a high school freshman, has also been learning judo at the same dojo with his father for three years and has now obtained a certified 1st dan black belt.
The Ham family, both father and son judo black belts, plan to continue practicing judo in the future.
Ham said, “I don’t have any special plans, but I will keep doing judo.”
There was a time when he encouraged juniors to learn judo, and some learned for about a year before quitting, but he regretted that there are currently no district office employees training together.
Ham explained the reason, saying, “Many employees learn table tennis or tennis, but judo seems not to be easy to take up.”
Although Ham has a calm personality, many around him say that his proactive approach to Yangcheon-gu’s public relations work seems to have been cultivated through practicing judo.
Lee Sung-yeon, head of the Waterworks Division in Yangcheon-gu, praised him, saying, “Ham is an excellent public official with not only good character but also a very proactive work attitude.”
Also, while receiving good evaluations for his diligent work attitude, he showed passion by successfully promoting the Yangcheon-gu Y Education Expo, held over three days starting on the 15th at Yangcheon Park and other locations.
