Reactor Automatically Shut Down Due to Coolant Pump Malfunction
No Abnormalities in Radiation Safety
NSC "Technical Experts Dispatched Immediately"
The Shin-Wolsong Unit 2 reactor automatically shut down at 12:35 PM on the 18th, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) announced. There are no radiation-related abnormalities, and technical experts have been dispatched to the site.
According to the NSSC, the cause of the automatic shutdown of Shin-Wolsong Unit 2, located in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, was a malfunction in the reactor coolant pump. The reactor coolant pump circulates water to transfer heat from the reactor to the steam generator, and due to the malfunction of this equipment, the reactor operation was automatically halted, the NSSC reported.
The NSSC stated, "The Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant regional office is inspecting the safety of the site immediately after the incident occurred, and experts from the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) have been dispatched for a detailed investigation."
Shin-Wolsong Unit 2 resumed power generation in June after completing its regular inspection.
