Chairman Ryu: "Murder Live Broadcast Deleted 10 Hours Later"
Request for Voluntary Regulation Measures on Provocative and False Manipulated Content
Google has promised to ensure that illegal and harmful YouTube content in South Korea is promptly deleted and blocked.
Marc Erickson, Vice President of Government External Policy at Google, is shaking hands with Ryu Heerim, Chairman of the Korea Communications Standards Commission, on the 16th (Korean time) in Washington DC, USA.
On the 16th (Korean time), Marcom Erickson, Vice President of Government and External Policy at Google, made this statement during a working-level meeting with Ryu Heerim, Chairman of the Korea Communications Standards Commission, in Washington DC, USA.
Chairman Ryu expressed deep concern, saying, "Recently, a live-streamed murder content on YouTube in Korea was deleted only after 10 hours of deletion request," and urged Google to take swift action.
Chairman Ryu also requested proactive self-regulatory measures from Google against YouTube channels that upload sensational, provocative, or false manipulated content.
In response, Vice President Marcom Erickson stated, "We will ensure that YouTube content violating South Korean laws and regulations will be promptly blocked in the future."
He also said, "We will consider closer cooperation with the Korea Communications Standards Commission when illegal and harmful YouTube content is distributed."
Meanwhile, this consultation is a concrete follow-up to the first meeting held last September when Vice President Erickson, responsible for Google's external policy, visited the Korea Communications Standards Commission.
The Commission said, "We expect this consultation to mark a new turning point in voluntary regulatory cooperation with Google."
