Google has officially launched its search engine equipped with its generative artificial intelligence (AI) Gemini.
On the 14th (local time), Google held its 'Google Annual Developer Conference (I/O)' at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, unveiling the future vision of AI through Gemini.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, said, "We have incorporated everything imaginable about AI into the Gemini ecosystem," adding, "We are pleased to announce the launch of the completely revamped experience called 'AI Overview' to all users in the United States starting this week."
The AI Overview uses Gemini to quickly summarize search results and provide related links. Users can freely search in a conversational format and can search not only with photos but also with videos.
Equipping the search engine with generative AI marks the biggest transformation since Google's inception. Search results are provided in a conversational format. Google announced plans to offer this to over 1 billion users by the end of the year.
Google also introduced a new 'Project Astra' based on Gemini and Google's voice model. This feature allows AI to see, hear, and converse like a human, acting as a personal assistant for users. For example, it pulls personal information from Google apps such as Gmail, Google Docs, and Calendar to inform users of their schedules and help plan their activities.
As a preliminary step toward this vision, Google unveiled 'Gemini Live.' This feature enables human-like conversations and recognizes images through uploads. Google plans to launch Gemini Live within a few months and subsequently add real-time visual and auditory functions for Project Astra.
Additionally, Google announced that its multimodal AI model Gemini 1.5 Pro, unveiled last February, will be available in 35 languages including Korean starting today. Google stated, "This event marks the official beginning of the 'Gemini era,'" and added, "With the completion of the Gemini ecosystem, we plan to accelerate AI innovation."
