Seongdong-gu Operates Senior Health Education Program "Marching to Youth" for Hyo Sarang Elders

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that it is operating the regional Hyosarang Senior Health Education program, "Happiness in Youth is Ongoing," to enhance the self-directed health management capabilities of elderly people with chronic diseases and provide positive motivational opportunities for a happy life in old age.

"Happiness in Youth is Ongoing" (hereinafter referred to as "Youth Happiness March") is part of Seongdong-gu's pioneering home health care project, the "Hyosarang Health Primary Care Physician Project," which has been promoted since 2017.

The "Hyosarang Health Primary Care Physician" project targets seniors aged 65 and older and health-vulnerable groups in the community. Hyosarang health primary care physicians and village nurses visit homes directly to provide chronic disease treatment and medical consultations, measure and manage key health indicators such as blood pressure and blood sugar, and offer services for preventing elderly depression and dementia. This project plays a crucial role as the frontline of health management for seniors in Seongdong-gu.

Seongdong-gu conducts education sessions four times over four weeks (based on the first half of the year from April to June) in each region?Haengdang, Majang-Yongdap, Seongsu, and Geumho?so that seniors can receive education close to their residences.

The education program is designed to improve seniors' self-directed health management abilities and digital skills, covering the latest information on chronic disease prevention and management, nutrition management practicable in daily life, laughter therapy combined with physical exercises, oral health care in old age, dementia prevention education, and digital competency education including how to use QR codes, smartphones, and kiosks.

For the mental health of seniors, a basic health survey including frailty assessment and depression screening when necessary is conducted before the education begins. Seniors who are not registered in the Hyosarang Health Primary Care Physician Project but require continuous management are registered and provided with regular home visit management services.

"Youth Happiness March" is open to any senior experiencing or wishing to prevent chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, and applications can be made through village nurses in each neighborhood. Seongdong-gu plans to gradually expand the "Youth Happiness March" program so that all seniors can participate without burden.

Additionally, as part of the Hyosarang Health Primary Care Physician Project, Seongdong-gu is conducting "Visiting Hyosarang Health Education." Hyosarang health primary care physicians visit senior centers monthly to provide small-group health education and address health-related questions, resulting in high satisfaction among seniors.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, "As we approach an ultra-aged society, it is very important to help prevent severe diseases and enable proactive health management." He added, "The Hyosarang Senior Health Education will instill confidence in seniors regarding health management and provide a great opportunity to foster a positive mindset for a healthy old age."
