Yeosu City to Operate Fisheries Radioactivity Inspection Team on a 'Regular' Basis

Field investigators visit fish markets, markets, and sashimi restaurants

Additional purchase of measurement devices capable of radionuclide identification planned

Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced that it has launched a 'permanent operation' of a fisheries radiation investigation team to secure safe food in response to the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

According to the city, since April, five field investigators have been hired to conduct continuous portable radiation measurements of seafood at wholesale markets, seafood sales markets, and sashimi restaurants, with more than 200 radiation measurements conducted daily.

Since the time of the Fukushima nuclear power plant contaminated water discharge into the ocean last year, the city has conducted self-inspections of portable radiation detectors more than three times a week, and this has been further strengthened to ensure the reliability of seafood food safety.

The investigation results are transparently disclosed through the city's website, electronic bulletin boards, and bus information displays, along with radiation measurements and safety inspection results of the Yeosu sea area, so that citizens can easily access them.

In addition, starting from June this year, the city plans to purchase one more radiation detector capable of nuclide identification to provide more accurate information to citizens.

A city official said, "We feel the strong interest of citizens in seafood safety at the front lines, as seafood handling businesses actively cooperate with the investigation," adding, "As the No. 1 fisheries city in Jeollanam-do, we will do our best to secure safe seafood food and minimize damage to fisheries and related industries."
