Amendment to Ordinance Proposed by Gwangju Councilor Kang Suhoon Passed in Plenary Session
A basis has been established to allow the award of honorary citizenship certificates to the bereaved families if the recipients in the Gwangju area are deceased.
According to the Gwangju Metropolitan Council on the 13th, Councilor Kang Su-hoon (The Democratic Party of Korea, Seo-gu 1), who was the main proposer, had the "Partial Amendment to the Ordinance on the Awarding of Gwangju Metropolitan City Honorary Citizenship Certificates and the Appointment of Honorary Mayors" passed at the 2nd plenary session of the 324th extraordinary meeting on the same day.
The main content of the amendment newly defines the term "Gwangju Metropolitan City Honorary Citizen" and specifies that if the recipient of the honorary citizenship certificate is deceased, the certificate can be awarded to the bereaved family.
Councilor Kang said, "With this ordinance amendment, even in the case of the deceased, it will be an opportunity to remember activities that have elevated the honor of Gwangju and to instill pride in future generations," adding, "At a time when the participation and role of honorary citizens are more important and necessary than ever to widely promote Gwangju domestically and internationally."
He continued, "There is a situation that requires even more special attention to Gwangju's honorary citizens," emphasizing, "Please show great interest in the establishment and revitalization of the amended ordinance on awarding honorary citizenship certificates and appointing honorary mayors."
