CJ Logistics has announced its intention to achieve a logistics super-gap by leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, automation, and robotics. The company aims to maximize efficiency and actively expand into new businesses including eco-friendly initiatives.


Kim Minsu, CJ Logistics AI and Big Data Management Leader (Executive Director), will attend the Future Enterprise Forum hosted by this publication on the 22nd to explain cases of technological innovation in logistics companies.


Focus on Maximizing Efficiency... Differentiation in Logistics

CJ Logistics has concentrated on 'digital logistics transformation' by leading with AI, big data, and automated facilities. A representative example is the AI-based volume forecasting engine, the 'E-commerce Order Volume Prediction System,' developed by analyzing approximately 5 billion data points over 36 months using a machine learning model in 2021. This engine estimates the daily fluctuating parcel volumes and implements an optimal truck and loading/unloading workforce allocation model, which helped optimize logistics center operating costs.


The 'Depalletizer' system was also effective. It is a system that moves boxes stacked on pallets to a conveyor belt using robots. Robots equipped with AI deep learning technology recognize the volume of boxes, determine the amount that can be lifted at once, and find and execute the optimal work sequence.


AI Utilized Beyond Logistics to Eco-friendly and New Businesses

CJ Logistics did not limit AI technology application to logistics center operations. It actively utilized AI to discover new growth engines, covering everything from waste minimization to next-generation freight platforms. The AI-applied 'Smart Packaging' is cited as an example of AI use in the eco-friendly sector. The 'Minimum Packaging Algorithm' suggested an appropriate packaging level during the combined packaging process. They also developed tape-type invoices that removed plastic tape materials and significantly reduced packaging time.


Autonomous trucks are also being used for movement between hubs such as parcel logistics centers. Partnering with autonomous driving startup MasAuto, a pilot project began in March. An 11-ton large truck operates six times a week on a 218 km trunk route from CJ Logistics Incheon Terminal Center to Okcheon Hub Terminal. The digital transportation platform 'The Unban,' launched last year, directly connects shippers and carriers to improve opaque commission practices. Additionally, AI that has learned logistics big data and external information such as weather, oil prices, and seasonal factors finds the optimal freight rates.

The core of CJ Logistics' 'technology management' is the TES Logistics Technology Research Institute. Since its launch in 2020, it has designed various automated facilities and technology-based operation systems. Based on this experience, the company has also conducted logistics-related consulting for client companies. To this end, it has continuously recruited talent. Last year alone, it recruited Leader Kim, Kim Jeonghee, Head of the Data & Solution Group, and Guseongyong, Head of Advanced Technology at TES Logistics Technology Research Institute, who is an expert in robotics and AI.
