Yangcheon-gu Environmental Officer Uniforms Replaced After 20 Years with Breathable Products Yangcheon-gu environmental officer wearing a work uniform improved with functional fabric

Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gijae) announced on the 13th that, ahead of the increasingly severe summer heatwaves, it will replace the summer work uniform fabric with a functional fabric that offers excellent breathability and elasticity for the first time among Seoul’s autonomous districts in 20 years, aiming to improve the working environment of on-site workers, the environmental public officers.

The existing uniforms made of Coolmax and cotton materials have been criticized for insufficient ventilation and elasticity, causing discomfort during summer work.

To address this, the district will change the upper garment fabric to polyester, which has good breathability and is less prone to wrinkling, and replace the lower garment fabric with a polyester and polyurethane blended material that offers good elasticity and comfort. The improved uniforms will be provided starting with this year’s summer uniforms.

Additionally, key areas such as the lower part of the pants, which are prone to getting dirty during cleaning tasks, have been designed and colored to resist stains, enhancing the visual effect as well.

In particular, following the revision of the collective agreement between Seoul City and the Seoul City Labor Union in November last year, which allows autonomous districts to select functional fabrics for work uniforms through labor-management agreements considering the working environment of environmental public officers, the district promptly conducted labor-management consultations. After gathering opinions from on-site workers and conducting market research and product evaluations, Yangcheon-gu was able to be the first in Seoul to improve the summer work uniform fabric.

In January, the district also established six new rest areas equipped with convenience facilities such as rest spaces, kitchens, laundry rooms, and air conditioning/heating systems to boost the morale of cleaning contractors’ sanitation workers and create a comfortable and pleasant working environment.

Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “We have improved the work uniform fabric for the first time in Seoul to help environmental public officers, who work hard to maintain a clean environment behind the scenes, work more comfortably. We will continue to actively strive to improve the safe working environment for on-site workers, the environmental public officers.”
