Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) is reportedly in talks with the UK government to build a new nuclear power plant off the coast of Wales, according to foreign media reports.
On the 12th (local time), major foreign media outlets reported that UK sources said KEPCO has held initial discussions with UK officials to construct a new nuclear power plant in the Anglesey Wylfa area, and a ministerial-level meeting is expected to take place this week.
Government officials also revealed that Andrew Bowie, the UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, is scheduled to meet with KEPCO this week to discuss the matter.
Previously, Japan's Hitachi had been conducting a nuclear power project in Wylfa since 2012 but abandoned the project in 2021 due to disagreements with the UK government over business requirements. The UK Government's Great Britain Nuclear (GBN) reportedly began purchasing the Wylfa nuclear site from Hitachi last month.
However, a senior official from the Korean government reportedly expressed a cautious stance regarding KEPCO's potential site acquisition, stating that building a nuclear power plant in the UK is a challenging endeavor, according to foreign media.
