Democratic Party Freshman Lawmakers Begin Tent Sit-in... "Accept Marine Corps Special Prosecutor"

On the 10th, first-term lawmakers of the Democratic Party of Korea held an 'Emergency Action Declaration Ceremony to Enforce the Special Prosecutor for Corporal Chae' and began a tent sit-in protest.

About 40 first-term Democratic Party lawmakers held a press conference in front of the National Assembly main building, urging the government to accept the Special Prosecutor Act for Corporal Chae and to change the national policy direction. The event was attended by Democratic Party Floor Leader Park Chan-dae and former Floor Leader Hong Ik-pyo, who led the passage of the Special Prosecutor Act at the plenary session on the 2nd.

Floor Leader Park said, "It is arrogant to talk about a conditional special prosecutor as if bargaining over the lives of the people," adding, "President Yoon must unconditionally accept the Special Prosecutor Act in full."

The first-term lawmakers stated in their resolution, "The Yoon Seok-yeol administration has been eager to avoid responsibility, ignoring the voices of the people who demand revealing the truth of the case and a responsible attitude for fact-finding," and argued, "An independent and fair special prosecutor is absolutely necessary to prevent distortion of the truth and evasion of responsibility."

They continued, "In President Yoon's press conference on his 2nd anniversary in office yesterday, there was not even a mention of the Special Prosecutor for Corporal Chae, which the majority of the people demanded in the last general election, effectively making clear his refusal of the Special Prosecutor Act," and raised their voices, saying, "If it is not to avoid the truth through a self-issued pardon, the Special Prosecutor for Corporal Chae must now be accepted with a responsible attitude."

The tent sit-in protest will continue with first-term lawmakers taking turns from that day until the Special Prosecutor Act is passed. On the 13th, a press conference urging acceptance of the Special Prosecutor for Corporal Chae is planned to be held in front of the Yongsan Presidential Office.
