Jeon Seung-il, a member of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu Council, took the lead in proposing the 'Children's Survival Swimming Education Support Ordinance' on the 10th.
Councilor Jeon explained the reason for the enactment, saying, "According to data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, 811 people visited emergency rooms due to drowning accidents over five years (2016-2020), with children aged 9 and under accounting for the highest proportion at 28.9%. There is a need to establish concrete grounds for water safety education for children."
Furthermore, Councilor Jeon stated, "With the enactment of this ordinance, I hope that survival swimming education utilizing the swimming pool at the National Sports Center located in the Sangmu district will be revitalized. Moving forward, we will actively support various policies for the safety and health of children in Seo-gu and work closely with related organizations to enhance the substance and accessibility of survival swimming education."
