Samsung Securities and Samsung Futures Launch US Stock Options Trading Service

Samsung Securities and Samsung Futures announced on the 9th that they will start offering trading services for U.S. stock options based on individual U.S.-listed stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Options are rights to buy or sell an underlying asset at a predetermined price at a specific time. U.S. stock options are overseas derivative products that trade call options (buy rights) and put options (sell rights) based on the rise or fall of individual stock prices.

Since U.S. stock options require only the payment of a premium and allow the use of leverage, they can generate profits or losses greater than the invested amount compared to stocks. Additionally, U.S. stock option trading allows investment in both directions, whether the stock price rises or falls. Investors holding U.S. stocks can maximize profits by purchasing call options on their holdings in addition to gains from stock price increases. Conversely, when a price decline is expected, investors can protect their assets by purchasing put options to reduce losses.

Interest and demand for U.S. stock options are on the rise. According to statistics from the Korea Financial Investment Association, the trading volume of U.S. stock options by domestic investors this year has significantly exceeded the monthly average trading volume in 2023. In February alone, a record high of over 150,000 contracts was recorded domestically.

U.S. individual stock options are available for 56 stocks, including Tesla, Nvidia, and Apple. To trade, investors must open a Samsung Securities overseas futures and options account. Additionally, U.S. ETF options (35 stocks) and zero-day options (SPX weekly) are available through Samsung Futures. After opening a "securities partnership account" with Samsung Futures via Samsung Securities’ mobile application "mPOP," trading can be conducted.

To commemorate the launch of U.S. stock options, Samsung Securities will hold a commission-free event throughout May. Customers can trade up to 3,000 contracts free of charge for one month from the application date, and preferential commission of $1 per contract will be offered until December. Samsung Futures will also run an event allowing 50 free contracts per month until December.

For more details, please refer to the Samsung Securities or Samsung Futures websites, Samsung Securities mPOP app, or contact the Family Center.
