"Social Maladjustment Dissatisfaction... Attempting to Satisfy Through Partner Control"
Professor Lee Su-jeong of the Department of Criminal Psychology at Kyonggi University diagnosed that the suspect in the so-called 'medical student dating murder case' "is highly likely to have mental health issues."
On the 9th, Professor Lee appeared on CBS Radio's 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show' and said, "In typical premeditated murders, the perpetrator chooses a place where they won't be noticed by others, but this incident occurred at 5 p.m. in the densely populated Gangnam area of Seoul," adding, "It is quite different from a typical premeditated murder, such as one dreaming of a perfect crime."
Professor Lee also pointed out that it was unusual that the police discovered the deceased victim during the process of rechecking the scene after the suspect's suicide attempt. On the 6th, the police responded to a report that "a man was about to jump from the rooftop" and pulled out the medical student Choi (25), but later, following Choi's statement that he had left a bag containing drugs behind, the police rechecked the scene and found the deceased victim, leading to Choi's emergency arrest. Currently, Choi is suspected of killing his girlfriend, who is the same age, with a weapon.
He said, "While the suspect was being rescued, he said one thing: 'There is a bag, so I need to get the bag from the rooftop,'" adding, "This suggests the person's mental vulnerability, such as personality issues."
He continued, "It seems this person had an almost perfectionist personality during adolescence. However, it has been confirmed that he repeated a year in university after admission. He is probably very quiet but harbors a lot of internal frustration, making him like a ticking time bomb. The experience of repeating a year likely acted as a fuse triggering personality problems. It seems he tried to satisfy his frustration from social maladjustment by controlling his girlfriend. It is a very twisted desire," he pointed out.
Professor Lee said, "It also appears highly likely that this person had a history of frequent suicide attempts or ideation. During the process of reconnecting with the victim, who was a middle school classmate, he may have continuously threatened suicide," adding, "In fact, while threats to kill are dangerous, threatening to kill oneself to prevent the other from leaving is also a very dangerous situation. This can be considered an extension of stalking."
Regarding the possibility of psychopathy, he said, "It seems he repeatedly staged suicide acts to avoid breaking up with his girlfriend and to control her, and such controlling desires are not easily found in ordinary men," adding, "I think we should suspect psychopathic tendencies."
Furthermore, Professor Lee said, "Victims of relationship crimes like dating murders are increasing by 30% every year, and we need to consider whether the mental health of young people is becoming increasingly fragile, leading to immature situations," adding, "To prevent this, education must start from a very young age, and the nation needs to seriously contemplate this issue."
