5·18 Memories Embedded in 'Jeonil Building' Transformed into a Familiar Space for Future Generations

Moram Platform Co., Ltd. Holds 'Citizen Cultural Experience Specialized Program Media Day'

Announces Key Business Plans and Operation Strategies for This Year... Establishes Local Cooperation System

Emphasizes Role as a Complex Cultural Space and Anticipates Gwangju 'Landmark' with Cultural Content

The Jeonil Building in Gwangju, which has preserved the bittersweet history of the May 18 Democratic Uprising and was once difficult for citizens to approach, will be transformed into a familiar space for future generations through differentiated programs this year.

The cultural programs of ‘Jeonil Building 245,’ which will be reborn as a future-oriented landmark of Gwangju, are generating great anticipation.

Moram Platform Co., Ltd., selected as the operator of the 2024 ‘Jeonil Building 245’ citizen cultural experience specialized program, held a ‘Media Day’ on the 7th to announce the main business plans and detailed operational plans for this year.

5·18 Memories Embedded in 'Jeonil Building' Transformed into a Familiar Space for Future Generations Lee Dan-bi, Director of Moram Platform, is explaining the 2024 Jeonil Building 245 Citizen Culture Experience Specialized Program at the Media Day held on the 7th.

They have established a regional cooperation system with Art Street, the May 18 Democratic Uprising Memorial Hall, Gwangju Tourism Organization, and the Daein Art Market project group, discussing concrete measures such as achieving cost efficiency through joint promotion by connecting with local residents including small business owners and youth.

Moram Platform is the largest platform holding young artists from Gwangju and Jeonnam, planning and operating various cultural, artistic, and hobby programs in the region.

The slogan at the core of the operational plan, ‘Gwangju’s Landmark, New Future. Jeonil Building 24.5h,’ reflects the future-oriented image of Jeonil Building 245, looking beyond 24 hours to an additional 0.5 hours.

It embodies the direction for 2024, meaning to inherit the spirit of May and operate specialized programs that anyone can participate in anytime and anywhere through the digitalization of various cultural programs.

Starting with the Timeless 24.5h slogan, the event introduced plans and goals for various programs such as ▲ May 18 Memorial Specialized Programs ▲ Log-in Jeonil ▲ All-day Festa ▲ Check-in Party (including flea markets) ▲ Citizen Participation Hobby Experiences ▲ Urban Camping in Jeonilmaru, as well as cooperation plans with local tourism resources.

The three core focuses of this project are ▲ building an integrated platform for easy use ▲ establishing a viral promotion structure through the younger generation ▲ attracting tourists.

Along with the significance of Jeonil Building 245, which symbolizes May 18, the role as a ‘complex cultural space’ for growth into a cultural and artistic tourism hub sought by citizens was emphasized. To this end, various convenience services such as online program promotion and advance reservations through the Gwangju and Jeonnam hobby platform ‘Moram’ have been prepared.

To increase young people’s interest and participation in cultural experiences, sophisticated cultural content will be operated. Additionally, the entire program operation will be digitalized to allow easy access and enjoyment anytime and anywhere.

The goal is to develop into an open space accessible to everyone and grow into Gwangju’s representative cultural and artistic hub.

Especially this year, through cooperation with surrounding tourism infrastructure such as Daein Market and Art Street, as well as related organizations like the May 18 Memorial Hall and Gwangju Tourism Organization, active attraction of not only local citizens but also overseas visitors is planned.

With the historical significance of Jeonil Building 245 and diverse cultural programs showcased, and having already recruited 2,000 domestic and international tourists in advance, prospects for tourist attraction are bright.

Moram Platform has designed programs to efficiently utilize the spaces and facilities on each floor of Jeonil Building. Instead of using each floor separately, they planned to link the floors together.

In May, as part of the May 18 Memorial Specialized Programs, experiences such as making rice balls, May 18 dark tourism, and a May 18 photo exhibition will be prepared at Jeonil Building.

In particular, on the 18th from 2 PM to 4 PM, former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum will give a lecture titled ‘Asking about the May 18 Democratic Uprising and the Future of Gwangju.’ Distinguished guest lectures will continue to be held regularly.

A party for the general public is also prepared. The ‘Jeonil Check-in Market’ on June 1 and an art stage planned to be held weekly or biweekly until November will feature well-made performances such as crossover bands and magic shows, with themes selected each week.

In addition, citizen-led cultural club activities support and tour-type cultural projects based at Jeonil Building are ambitious plans of Moram Platform.

Through this, the goal is for Jeonil Building to contribute to the cultural development of the local community and grow into Gwangju’s representative cultural and artistic hub.

Kim Jong-eon, CEO of Moram Platform Co., Ltd., said, “We are preparing diligently with gratitude to communicate with citizens through various programs in the meaningful space of Jeonil Building 245,” adding, “We ask for the interest and visits of many people so that it becomes a place of communication where historical value is shared and everyday joy is enjoyed.”
