Prosecution Indicts and Detains Man in His 30s for Sharing 'Daema Jelly'

Suspected Violation of the Act on the Control of Narcotics

A man in his 30s who distributed jelly containing cannabis ingredients to acquaintances and consumed it himself has been indicted while in custody.

On the 8th, the Criminal Division 3 of the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Hee-young) announced that a man in his 30s, Mr. A, was indicted in custody on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act (cannabis).

Mr. A is accused of providing jelly containing cannabis ingredients to three university classmates at a restaurant in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, on the 11th of last month, causing them to consume it, and also consuming it himself. At the time, Mr. A was investigated to have distributed the jelly saying, "It makes you feel good."

The prosecution also investigated Mr. B, a companion who received and consumed the jelly from Mr. A, on the same charges, and since last month, issued a conditional suspension of prosecution with participation in the nationwide 'Judicial-Treatment-Rehabilitation Linkage Model' for simple drug use offenders.

The 'Judicial-Treatment-Rehabilitation Linkage Model' is a system in which the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Ministry of Food and Drug Safety collaborate to evaluate the individual addiction levels of conditional suspension of prosecution subjects among simple drug use offenders who are deemed to require treatment and rehabilitation through an expert committee composed of mental health specialists, and provide customized rehabilitation programs accordingly.

A prosecution official stated, "While strictly punishing drug crimes, we will actively utilize the 'Judicial-Treatment-Rehabilitation Linkage Model' for simple drug use offenders struggling with drug addiction to prevent recidivism and do our best to help them fully reintegrate into society."
