"If you invest as profits come over time and sell the day after tomorrow hoping for a big hit, that's speculation"

On the 3rd, EBS uploaded a video titled "A Husband Who Started Full-Time Homemaking After Early Retirement with 2.6 Billion KRW Earned" on its YouTube channel 'EBS Documentary.' This video is part of the special documentary interview "Dream of a Big Hit, Korea 2018 Part 3," which aired on June 10, 2018. The homemaker featured in the documentary, Lee Da-eun (then 59 years old), explained, "I only had Ethereum," and "I invested by selling some portions and cashing out whenever the price went up or down." The profits Lee disclosed on the broadcast amounted to 2.6 billion KRW. Lee, who was a full-time homemaker in the past, was running a business while investing in cryptocurrency.

She emphasized the importance of investment, saying, "What was written in cryptocurrency-related books 10 years ago is now happening exactly in the real world," but also warned against 'speculation.' Lee said, "When you invest, over time, the value of what you have increases and profits are generated," adding, "(Speculation) is putting in 1 million KRW and hoping to sell the day after tomorrow for 2 million KRW. Approaching it this way can turn real estate or stocks into speculation as well," she pointed out.

Lee's husband, Kang Ho-geon (then 64 years old), introduced himself, saying, "I worked in the shipping company sector and took early retirement 10 years ago," and "We lived in Busan, but naturally moved up together when my wife advanced to Seoul." In the video, he was starting his second act in life as a 'full-time homemaker,' taking charge of cooking and cleaning. While Kang was making doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), Lee was busy with her eyes and hands.

Kang pointed out that the happiest aspect of his wife's investment success was that it made it possible to prepare for old age and support their children. Kang said, "Honestly, until now, I was worried whether we could confidently marry off our children living like this," adding, "Now I understand the mindset of our parents' generation. Even after retirement, if you don't have skills, you can only do security or cleaning work."

Lee also said their life as a couple has changed significantly. She said, "We originally had over 100 million KRW in debt, but we paid it off, and I even bought my husband a watch. I think our concept of money has changed," adding, "It's good that we don't have to adjust our lifestyle to the salary and can enjoy a rich life whenever we want." Lee advised, "I think you can secure sufficient retirement funds as long as you don't go into excessive debt and avoid speculation."

Ethereum has risen more than 700% since the broadcast... Netizens say, "Curious about current profits"

The video was viewed over 250,000 times on YouTube within four days, and posts containing screenshots of the video were also shared on online communities, becoming a hot topic. Netizens who watched the video responded with comments such as "I'm jealous," "If you fail, it's speculation; if you succeed, it's investment," "I'm curious about the current profits," and "Seems like a wise investment."

Meanwhile, the current value of Ethereum, which Lee invested in, has surged more than 700% compared to the time of the broadcast. In June 2018, when this documentary aired, the price of Ethereum was 509,500 KRW (based on the month-end Upbit closing price), but as of now, it has reached 4.29 million KRW. During the peak of the 'coin bull market' in December 2021, it soared to 5.9 million KRW, marking an all-time high.
