Seocho-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) announced on the 8th that it will complete the undergrounding project by removing 359 utility poles across 18 sections within the district by 2026. Seocho-gu's undergrounding rate stands at 73.96%, significantly surpassing Seoul's average of 56.9%, and the district will continue to actively promote the project.

This year, the district aims to complete five sites starting with Sinbanpo-ro 19-gil [Gyesong Elementary School], followed by Seocho-daero 74-gil [Youth Library], Seocho Jungang-ro [Gyodae Station], Seocho Jungang-ro [Nambu Terminal Station], and Yangjae Commercial Area [Maljukgeori]. The 18 sections undergoing undergrounding include nine side streets, four main roads, and five Green New Deal sites (supported by national and city funds near school commuting routes), which are closely related to residents' daily lives, school commuting routes, and heavily trafficked main roads.

To improve urban aesthetics and ensure the safety of children’s school commuting routes, the district completed the undergrounding project on a 320m section of Sinbanpo-ro 19-gil (Gyesong Elementary School to Dulwich College) on the 6th. In this section, power and communication lines were buried underground, and 13 utility and communication poles were removed.

Sinbanpo-ro 19-gil is a major commuting route for students of Gyesong Elementary School, Sinbanpo Middle School, and Dulwich College Seoul. Through this undergrounding project, overhead lines that disrupt the cityscape have been organized, greatly contributing to securing a safe commuting path for students. The district also plans to additionally promote the undergrounding project this year on a 140m section of Sinbanpo-ro 15-gil near Sinbanpo Middle School adjacent to this area, continuously improving the pedestrian environment around the schools.

In particular, the Yangjae Commercial Area Maljukgeori undergrounding project, which is a major focus this year, will cover a total length of 780m, with 47 utility and communication poles scheduled for removal. Since this area is densely populated with shops and residences, the project is expected to be highly effective in improving the residential environment and revitalizing the local alleyway commercial district.

Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho-gu, said, “I am pleased to offer a clear, open sky and safe sidewalks through undergrounding,” adding, “We will pay close attention to the safety of students’ walking routes and the convenience of residents.”
