Gyeonggi-do Sees Increase in Wildlife Rescues This Year... 573 Cases Rescued Eurasian Eagle-Owl 'Yujo'

Gyeonggi Province announced on the 8th that it rescued 573 cases of wild animals in danger from January to April this year. This is a slight increase compared to the same period last year (522 cases).

In particular, the number of rescues of young wild animals surged. In late April alone, 100 wild animals were rescued.

The main cause of rescue was young animals losing their mothers, accounting for 42 cases (42%), followed by birds colliding with building glass walls at 22 cases (22%).

The reason for the increase in rescue cases in late April is that young wild birds leave the nest from this time to learn necessary survival skills from their mothers, but since their flying skills are poor, they fall to the ground and are found by people.

Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province urged that when encountering young birds during a walk, it is preferable to call the Wildlife Rescue Management Center, explain the situation, and seek expert advice rather than rescuing them directly.

They added that if young wild animals are artificially rescued and raised by humans, they cannot learn essential survival skills, so even if they return to nature through the rescue center, it is difficult for them to survive in the wild.

Shin Byung-ho, Director of the Animal Welfare Division of Gyeonggi Province, said, "The surge in cases of young wild animal rescues is because many residents recognize the importance of wildlife and actively report," and asked for active participation and cooperation from residents to coexist with wild animals.
