Seongdong-gu, Proactive Response to Wind and Flood Disasters with 'Disaster Response Safe Korea Drill'

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Wono) will conduct the '2024 Disaster Response Safe Korea Drill' on May 10 to strengthen practical response capabilities for flood and wind disaster situations.

The 'Disaster Response Safe Korea Drill' is an annual nationwide exercise conducted according to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's Safe Korea Drill basic plan to prepare for various disasters and enhance response capabilities, minimizing damage to citizens in the event of disasters.

This year, Seongdong-gu has been selected as the '2024 Ministry of the Interior and Safety Pilot Training Institution,' with the Director of the Disaster Safety Headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and representatives from 50 institutions nationwide observing the on-site training.

The flood and wind disaster drill involving citizen participation, prepared for abnormal heavy rain and typhoons due to climate change, will be held at Garamgyo Bridge on Jungnangcheon Stream. The drill simulates a complex disaster scenario including the toppling of utility poles on Garamgyo Bridge caused by a typhoon, traffic accidents, vehicle falls, and water-related accidents. To facilitate this, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the day of the drill, the following areas will be restricted: ▲ South end of Seongdonggyo Bridge ▲ in front of Seongdong Vehicle Inspection Office ▲ Road 238-9, Yongdap-dong. Additionally, a flood disaster scenario in the low-lying residential area near Jungnangcheon Stream will be assumed to focus on checking the initial evacuation system for vulnerable groups such as elderly people living alone.

Seongdong-gu plans to conduct both on-site and discussion drills simultaneously to realistically reproduce the response situation during an actual disaster. The drill will be conducted by linking the on-site location at Garamgyo Bridge on Jungnangcheon Stream with the Seongdong-gu Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters in real time. This focuses on strengthening the real-time response and crisis management capabilities of the Seongdong-gu Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters in response to the complexly developing disaster situation.

Furthermore, to increase the utilization of the disaster safety communication network (PS-LTE) equipment, the network will be actively used throughout the entire drill process.

A total of about 350 people, including participating institutions such as Seongdong-gu Office, Seongdong Fire Station, and Seongdong Police Station, as well as the Seongdong-gu Autonomous Disaster Prevention Group and the Citizen Experience Group, will participate in this drill. Seongdong-gu will check the cooperation system among disaster-related organizations through the Safe Korea Drill and jointly respond from disaster occurrence to recovery stages.

Jeong Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "Disasters caused by flood and wind bring enormous human and property damage, so we will thoroughly check the flood and wind disaster response system and improve response capabilities through realistic drills." He added, "We will continue to do our best to proactively prepare for various disasters and create a safe Seongdong-gu where citizens can feel secure."
