Seal Broken, Foreign Substances Likely Entered
"Will Strengthen Hygiene During Delivery Process"

There is growing attention to claims that live flies and substances presumed to be fly eggs were found in fried chicken sold at a large supermarket in Changwon, Gyeongnam.

According to Yonhap News TV on the 7th, Mr. A, a man in his 40s living in Changwon, ordered fried chicken from a large supermarket using an application (app) on the 4th to eat with his children. However, when Mr. A received the delivered chicken, he was shocked to find live flies inside the packaging plastic.

Mr. A opened the plastic lid containing the chicken to inspect the inside. Several strands of white substances presumed to be fly eggs were stuck to the fried batter of the chicken. Photos released through the media show white, thin substances densely attached to the surface of the batter. Mr. A reportedly claims that these white substances are fly eggs.

After discovering the flies and foreign substances, Mr. A immediately complained to the supermarket’s customer center. In response, the supermarket stated, "It seems that flies entered during the delivery process," and offered a refund along with transportation costs for product collection.

Mr. A told Yonhap News TV, "It’s horrifying to think that I might have eaten it without knowing (about the foreign substances). I have developed a trauma toward fried chicken," and appealed, "I feel nauseous whenever I see fried chicken."

Meanwhile, the supermarket promised to prevent recurrence and said it would strengthen on-site management to ensure thorough hygiene during the chicken packaging process. Regarding how the foreign substances entered, they explained that usually the container lid is sealed during the packaging process, but this time, for unknown reasons, the seal was broken, allowing the substances to enter.

A supermarket official said, "We plan to receive the product from Mr. A later to accurately identify what the foreign substances are," and added, "We will thoroughly seal cooked products and further strengthen hygiene management during delivery so that customers can eat with peace of mind."
