Environmental Corporation and E-Sunhwan Governance Sign Business Agreement
Promoting Introduction of Incentive System for Excellent Recycling Companies
LG Electronics is taking the lead in collecting and recycling waste batteries from cordless vacuum cleaners, practicing ESG management.
On the 7th, LG Electronics announced that it signed a 'Small Secondary Battery Collection and Recycling Business Agreement' with the Korea Environment Corporation and E-Circulation Governance at LG Smart Park 2 in Changwon, Gyeongnam.
The three organizations agreed to establish and operate an electronic product resource circulation system and to promote the introduction of related systems such as incentives for excellent recycling companies.
From today until the 30th of next month, LG Electronics will conduct the 'Battery Turn' campaign. The campaign collects waste batteries from cordless vacuum cleaners to encourage customers to participate in resource circulation and offers discounts when purchasing new batteries. The campaign has been held twice a year since 2022, and this marks the 5th round. From this year, the three organizations jointly organize the campaign.
One waste battery from the LG Electronics 'CordZero A9S' cordless vacuum cleaner contains rare metals such as nickel (31.91g), cobalt (4.21g), lithium (6.06g), and manganese (2.04g). LG Electronics plans to recycle the rare metals extracted from the collected waste batteries as materials for new batteries.
From 2022 to last year, more than 63,000 customers participated in the Battery Turn campaign. The weight of waste batteries collected by LG Electronics reached 512,000 tons, totaling about 113,000 units. The rare metals extracted from these can produce approximately 100,000 LG Electronics CordZero A9S units.
Customers who wish to participate in the campaign can return used cordless vacuum cleaner waste batteries to any LG Electronics service center nationwide, regardless of the manufacturer. After returning the waste battery, customers who purchase a new battery for the LG Electronics CordZero A9S cordless vacuum cleaner at the service center will receive a 20,000 KRW discount.
If visiting a service center is difficult, customers can also return waste batteries to nearby waste home appliance collection boxes. The locations of these collection boxes can be checked on the Resource Circulation Practice Platform website. In this case, customers can purchase new batteries at a discount of up to 11,000 KRW on the LG Electronics website.
Baek Seung-tae, Vice President and Head of the Living Solution Business Division at LG Electronics H&A (Home Appliance) Business Headquarters, said, "We will continue various ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) activities to transition to a circular economy society, such as collecting and recycling waste batteries."
