Samsung SDI participated in the '32nd China Cycle Show 2024,' held from the 5th to the 8th at the Shanghai New International Expo Center in China, showcasing its competitiveness in cylindrical batteries.
The 'China Cycle Show' is one of the world's top four bicycle and motorcycle exhibitions, hosted by the China Bicycle Association. This year, over 1,700 related companies participated, an increase of more than 40% compared to the previous year.
Under the slogan "Already, All Ready! (Samsung SDI ready for everything that moves)," Samsung SDI introduced a diverse lineup of cylindrical batteries optimized for micro-mobility electrification.
Samsung SDI unveiled various models of its currently leading 21700 (21mm diameter, 70mm height) cylindrical batteries. The high-capacity 20Wh class model suitable for long-distance travel uses high-nickel cathode materials with over 90% nickel content, increasing capacity by more than 10% compared to previous versions. The long-life battery applies new materials to secure a lifespan of over 4,000 cycles. This product also supports fast charging.
Additionally, Samsung SDI plans to target the micro-mobility market with tabless design products and next-generation 46mm diameter batteries. The tabless design integrates the tab and electrode through precision equipment, expanding the current path and significantly enhancing output performance.
According to market research firm TSR, Samsung SDI ranked first in the electric bicycle battery market in 2023 with a 31% market share. Last year, the electric bicycle battery market was about 1 billion units in size, with an expected annual growth rate of 4%, and it is anticipated to grow even more this year.
Meanwhile, at the BoT (Battery of Things) exhibition zone, visitors could recognize the importance and technological value of batteries, the core power source of the micro-mobility market. Additionally, Samsung SDI showcased its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management activities as an eco-friendly company, including its RE100 implementation plan and its 19th consecutive inclusion in the DJSI (Dow Jones Sustainability Index).
