The Election Management Committee for the selection of the first half term Speaker candidates of the Democratic Party of Korea announced on the 3rd that the candidates for the 22nd first half term Speaker will be selected on the 16th.

After concluding the 21st regular session of the National Assembly, the ruling and opposition parties will enter a temporary session on the 11th. The temporary session, which will continue for 30 days until the 9th of next month, is expected to see confrontations between the parties over the handling of next year's budget bill, which has exceeded the legal deadline, the confirmation hearings for the second cabinet of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, and the Democratic Party's push for dual special investigations. The election will be held on the 16th at the National Assembly Members' Office Building. Candidate registration is from the 7th to 6 PM on the 8th. Candidate numbers will be determined by a lottery. Election campaigning is allowed from the 8th until the day before the election, the 15th.

If no candidate receives a majority in the first round of voting, a runoff election will be held between the top two candidates.

Typically, when the ruling party nominates a Speaker candidate, the candidate is confirmed through a plenary session of the National Assembly. So far, six-term members Chu Mi-ae and Cho Jung-sik, and five-term members Jung Sung-ho and Woo Won-shik from the Democratic Party have officially declared their candidacy for the Speaker election.
