The Korea Minting, Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corporation (KOMSCO) announced on the 3rd that it will produce and release the ‘Hwajeopdo Commemorative Medal’ in collaboration with Wonkwang University.
This medal is designed based on ‘Flowers and Butterflies,’ a motif painted by Nam Gye-woo, a Joseon Dynasty artist, depicting butterflies fluttering over flowers. KOMSCO reinterpreted ‘Flowers and Butterflies’ into a three-dimensional gold medal in collaboration with Wonkwang University.

Artist Nam was also called ‘Namhojeop (南胡蝶)’ for his realistic and detailed depiction of butterflies. He gained fame as a master of bird-and-flower paintings in the late Joseon period, especially known for his highly decorative style.
Master craftsman Son Kwang-soo, a Korean national master, participated in the production of the Hwajeopdo Commemorative Medal. The medal’s value is further enhanced by KOMSCO, the only KRX gold market quality certification institution in Korea, guaranteeing 99.9% purity.
The Hwajeopdo Commemorative Medal is available for purchase at KOMSCO’s online shopping mall, Orotdium Hall, Lotte Department Store Mall, and the Korea Precious Metals & Jewelry Exchange.
Earlier, KOMSCO signed a sponsorship agreement with Wonkwang University in February. The Hwajeopdo Commemorative Medal is the first product released through mutual cooperation with Wonkwang University’s Department of Metal Jewelry Design.

Starting with this medal, KOMSCO plans to introduce additional products in collaboration with Wonkwang University, including a four-leaf clover pendant, a three-dimensional Golden Dragon II medal, and a commemorative medal series honoring intangible cultural heritage knot masters.
A portion of the proceeds from the commemorative medal sales will be donated to support the development of the precious metals industry.
Sung Chang-hoon, president of KOMSCO, said, “We are honored to release creative products in collaboration with Wonkwang University. Part of the proceeds from the commemorative medal sales will be used through sponsorships to advance the domestic metal jewelry field.”
