‘Gyeongbuk Boom!’… Gyeongbuk TP, ‘Nationwide Most, 5th Time’ Newly Designated as Regulatory Free Zone

Uiseong Bio Valley Industrial Complex, Total Project Cost of 19.9 Billion KRW

Gyeongbuk Technopark announced that on the 30th of last month, the 13th Regulatory Sandbox Committee reviewed and approved the designation of the ‘Gyeongbuk Cell-Cultured Food Regulatory Sandbox,’ finalizing its new designation.

With this, Gyeongbuk has launched its fifth regulatory sandbox, the most in the nation, following Pohang’s ‘Battery Recycling’ in 2019, Andong’s ‘Industrial Hemp’ in 2020, Gimcheon’s ‘Smart Green Logistics’ in 2021, and Gyeongsan’s ‘Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging’ in 2022.

‘Gyeongbuk Boom!’… Gyeongbuk TP, ‘Nationwide Most, 5th Time’ Newly Designated as Regulatory Free Zone Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province, is explaining the 'Gyeongbuk Cell Cultured Food Regulatory Free Zone'.

The Cell-Cultured Food Sandbox will operate from June this year until December 2028, spanning 4 years and 7 months, with a total project budget of 19.9 billion KRW. Ten innovative companies will participate in the Bio Valley Industrial Complex area of Uiseong-gun to conduct commercialization demonstrations of cell-cultured food.

The core to commercializing high-quality cell-cultured food lies in securing fresh cell supply. By obtaining special permissions to utilize biopsy and same-day slaughtered tissues, the plan is to secure the texture and flavor of meat and enable mass production.

Through this, it is expected to attract investments from upstream and downstream companies and secure leadership in the cell-cultured food industry.

So far, Gyeongbuk has been designated with four regulatory sandboxes and plans to establish an innovation growth hub in the new industry sector in the central region (cell-cultured food - Uiseong), continuing to spread achievements through balanced development within Gyeongbuk and attracting companies.

Ha In-seong, President of Gyeongbuk Technopark, stated, “As the overall managing institution of the sandbox, we will lead the newly designated sandbox well, open the path for the cell-cultured innovative industry in the region, and do our best to help local companies grow through the sandbox.”
