The Only Individual Active in the Gwangju-Jeonnam Area
"Active in Lowlands... Requests to Refrain from Feeding or Provoking"
News has emerged that a red fox released in Sobaeksan, Chungbuk for ecological restoration was found in Gwangju, about 300 km away.
On the 2nd, Yonhap News Agency and the National Park Service's National Park Wildlife Conservation Center reported that a red fox wandering around a road in Gwangju was discovered early that morning. The discovered fox was running on the road wearing a collar with a GPS (Global Positioning System) device. It was revealed that this fox is a male endangered red fox released by the National Park Service in Sobaeksan last July for ecological restoration.
To confirm whether the fox has settled, the National Park Service monitors the locations of foxes 24 hours a day. Analyzing the movement of this fox, it is estimated that it is exploring habitats in Gwangju. Among the dozens of foxes released in Sobaeksan, this fox is believed to be the only individual active in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions.
The National Park Service has requested assistance to ensure the endangered red fox can settle stably. A service official said, "Due to their tendency to live in lowland areas, they often come into contact with people," and added, "Please refrain from feeding or provoking them as such actions can hinder their settlement."
Meanwhile, the National Park Service releases red foxes in Sobaeksan every year for ecological restoration. Because of this, news of fox habitats being discovered or sightings are often reported across the country.
