Scholarships Raised Through Foundation Delivered to Juniors
Busan Gongup High School Celebrates 100th Anniversary This Year
Graduates of Busan Technical High School (Busan Gonggo) in Nam-gu, Busan, have attracted attention by awarding a "1 million won scholarship" to all their junior students in celebration of the school's 100th anniversary.
Busan Gonggo announced, "At the 100th anniversary commemorative event scheduled for 10 a.m. on the 3rd, a scholarship of 1 million won will be given to every student." The school currently has about 620 students, making the total scholarship amount approximately 620 million won.
The source of the scholarship funds is the foundation corporation 'Busan Gonggo Scholarship Foundation.' The foundation was established in October 2012, with Jeong Seok-gyu, the first chairman and a 22nd graduate of the high school, donating 2 billion won.

At its inception, the foundation was named 'Shinyang Busan Gonggo Scholarship Foundation.' 'Shinyang' was the pen name of Chairman Jeong. About 10 years later, in 2022, the foundation transferred its principal assets and overall operations to Busan Gonggo, and accordingly, the name was changed to Busan Gonggo Scholarship Foundation. To date, the foundation has provided about 500 Busan Gonggo students with scholarships totaling around 500 million won.
The approximately 620 million won scholarship being awarded this time is said to be part of the funds raised by 267 alumni seniors for their juniors. The foundation conducted a fundraising campaign targeting about 40,000 alumni, with donations ranging from 100,000 won to as much as 100 million won from some seniors. The total amount raised so far has reached around 2 billion won.
The foundation stated, "We will continue to spare no support for our proud juniors," and that any remaining funds after the scholarship distribution will be spent on the school's development, including support for sports talents and the orchestra.
Meanwhile, Busan Gonggo was established in 1924 as Busan Public Industrial Supplementary School. In 1933, it was reorganized as Busan Public Vocational School, and in 1951, it became Busan Technical High School. It is the first high school in Busan and Gyeongnam to celebrate its 100th anniversary this year, with a total of 40,575 alumni graduates.
