Busan City Renovates 'Nakdonggang Estuary Eco Center Exhibition Hall'... Reopens on the 3rd Nakdong River Estuary Eco Center.

The reopening ceremony will be attended by about 50 people including Mayor Park Hyung-jun, Lee Jong-hee, Director of Cultural Heritage Conservation Bureau of the Cultural Heritage Administration, Choi Jong-won, Head of Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office, city council members, related organizations, and local residents. The event will proceed in the order of progress report, commemorative speech, congratulatory speech, opening performance (tape cutting), and facility tour.

The Eco Center was opened in June 2007 to sustainably preserve and manage Eulsukdo Ecological Park, a tidal wetland ecological restoration site, and to provide citizens with exhibition, education, and experience spaces about ecology, aiming to create a Nakdong River estuary where nature and humans coexist.

This place was built as a three-story building through an international architectural competition to enhance the image of Eulsukdo, a world-renowned migratory bird habitat, symbolizing its significance and international interest.

The interior of the exhibition hall, featuring charred wood exterior and Korean pine, shows the unique characteristics of the Eco Center.

Since April 2022, the exhibition hall has been newly renovated under the theme ‘Eulsukdo Zoom(IN)’, meaning ‘Becoming a resident of Eulsukdo, the paradise of nature, and exploring life,’ and will be unveiled to citizens from the 3rd.

This exhibition hall remodeling preserved the unique characteristics of the Eco Center while reorganizing the exhibition content to suit current trends.

Passing the information desk on the first floor and climbing the runway (slope) where red-billed gulls are flying, visitors can find the permanent exhibition hall on the second floor, composed of four zones.

▲ Zone 1 covers the formation and changes of the Nakdong River estuary ▲ Zone 2 exhibits various organisms inhabiting the Nakdong River estuary ▲ Zone 3 displays representative birds of the Nakdong River estuary and includes an experience space where visitors can create music with bird sounds ▲ Zone 4 consists of various experience spaces such as indoor activities and Live Sketch.

Live Sketch is a service where users can draw 2D plans directly on the web and see them converted into 3D in real time.

Additionally, the ‘Eulsukdo Gallery,’ planned to show the Nakdong River estuary in modern literature, and the ‘Archive Space,’ where specialized materials and videos related to the Nakdong River estuary can be viewed, have been established. Most notably, an ‘Indoor Birdwatching Space’ has been prepared where visitors can observe wetland wildlife through a large glass wall.

The Eco Center promotes the value of ‘coexistence of nature and humans’ by informing citizens of the importance of nature and conducting various ecological experience programs and citizen participation events to practice environmental conservation.

▲ Ecological experience programs using natural materials from the Nakdong River estuary for families or groups ▲ ‘Walking the Reed Path,’ where natural environment interpreters guide walks around the wetland with ecological explanations of Eulsukdo ▲ ‘Wildlife Medical Experience,’ which helps understand the meaning of coexistence through wildlife rescue, treatment, and rehabilitation experiences, are among the diverse ecological experience programs offered.

▲ Wetland experience events linked to environmental education weeks ▲ Autumn environmental education events held at the southernmost exploration site of Eulsukdo ▲ Winter migratory bird welcoming events promoting the internationally recognized migratory bird habitat of the Nakdong River estuary ▲ ‘Eulsukdo Ecological Culture Square,’ in cooperation with local cultural artists, are among the various citizen participation events prepared.

Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, “Unlike the rapidly changing surrounding building forests in the name of convenience and development, Eulsukdo Ecological Park is a space where time seems to have stopped, and speed and development bypass it.” He added, “I hope the Nakdong River Estuary Eco Center will establish itself as a hub facility for ecological environmental education and ecotourism for environmental conservation and coexistence with nature, becoming a popular destination for Busan citizens and tourists.”
