Creation of a Charming Garden with Seasonal Color Changes Around Byeolbitnaeruncheon (Bonglimgyo Section) Walking Trail... Rebirth as a Garden Filled with Over 60 Species of Flowers and Plants Including Star Hydrangea, Perennial Aster, and Liatris, Inspired by Stars, on the Damaged Lawn
Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) is gifting residents a new place of rest by creating the Starlight Garden, a space of relaxation and healing where flowers and nature harmonize, around the Byeolbitnaerin Stream area.
The damaged lawn section near Bongnim Bridge along Byeolbitnaerin Stream has been transformed into a garden inspired by stars, allowing visitors to experience colorful changes throughout the four seasons. Highlighting the charm of Gwanak, the attractive garden full of joy, named "The Garden Where Stars Become Flowers and Fall," opened on May 1.
Byeolbitnaerin Stream, Gwanak-gu’s representative healing space, is the most frequently used walking trail by Gwanak residents and is easily accessible to people of all ages and those with mobility difficulties.
In this project to create the Byeolbitnaerin Stream Attractive Garden, the district established flower paths using a four-season flower garden and mobile planters that bring seasonal changes even to concrete structures.
Additionally, over 60 diverse flowers and plants were planted, inspired by stars, including star-shaped hydrangeas, perennial asters, and liatris.
Other features include ▲ a 'Flower Wall' where flowers bloom on stone retaining walls ▲ a 'Blossom Tree' using waterside willows ▲ a waterside garden called 'Iris Garden' ▲ and a photo zone called 'Flower Frame,' providing both visual attractions and enjoyable activities.
Notably, during the garden creation process, about 50 participants including children from local daycare centers (Hangeol Daycare Center, Guro Sangnok Daycare Center), local residents, Gwanak citizen gardeners, and park and green space department staff joined in planting flowers and trees, focusing on transforming the space into an attractive area that grows together with the community.
Reflecting the garden’s nature of being nurtured alongside residents, various programs will be operated. The “Flower Stories We Didn’t Know” program, guided by citizen gardeners, aims not only to provide a garden to see and enjoy but also to encourage many residents to take an interest in gardening and participate in its care.
There are also plans to run the program “Let’s Go Flower Viewing Together at Byeolbitnaerin Stream,” inviting neighbors with mobility difficulties who find flower viewing challenging to the attractive garden to enjoy flower viewing and have their photos taken together.
In line with the increase in residents using the Sillim Line light rail and Byeolbitnaerin Stream, the district is accelerating the creation of Byeolbitnaerin Stream as a landmark by developing key points along the stream into specialized spaces. This effort aims to enhance the value of the waterside area as a cultural and vibrant hub, further advancing the creation of a waterside-sentimental city, Gwanak.
Park Jun-hee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, stated, “We will continue to do our best to actively support so that not only the 500,000 residents of Gwanak but also visitors to Gwanak can experience various fun and garden culture at Byeolbitnaerin Stream and gain happiness.”
