A middle school student who stabbed an elderly woman in her 80s with a weapon in broad daylight at an apartment complex in Seoul was caught by the police after about three hours.
The Dongdaemun Police Station in Seoul announced on the 30th that they have apprehended and are investigating a middle school student, identified as A, on charges of aggravated assault.
According to the police, around 12:55 PM that day, A allegedly stabbed the back of the neck of an elderly woman in her 80s who was walking in an apartment complex in Yongdu-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, and then fled the scene. The victim was taken to a hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Based on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and other evidence, the police arrested A at his residence in Dongdaemun-gu at around 4:15 PM the same day. A was found to be a criminal minor under the age of 14 (a "chokbeopsonyeon"). A chokbeopsonyeon is a minor who is not held criminally responsible; even if they commit acts punishable under criminal law, they do not face criminal charges but receive protective measures under the Juvenile Act.
The police are currently investigating A’s motive for the crime by accompanying him voluntarily along with his guardian. At the time of the incident, the victim went to the security office to ask for help from the security guard, who then reportedly called the fire department.
